Myanmar silversmiths were experts in the art of repouse and chasing, as illustrated by the intricate figural and ornamental decoration on this royal epistle case. Two nagas (mythical serpent deities who rule the subterranean realms) face each other above the center of the case, their eyes inlaid with precious red stones. Their bodies coil around the container, framing scences from the Vessantara Jataka-one of the previous lives of the Buddha. In one of the most well-known scenes from this Jataka- Vessantara poured of water on the recipients right hand for the giving away of the royal elephant.
